Sneak Eats [2/8/13]

I normally like to keep my Friday posts breakfast-themed, in anticipation of the weekend. But since its a special week, I'm going to give myself some slack (again).

It's the return of Sneak Eats! [See the series background here.]

1 - The weekend before last, I ran up to Northern Virginia for a day to see some best friends and attend a bridal shower. Lisa, Jess, and I met up at Northside Social in Clarendon for breakfast and (of course) chai tea lattes. I ordered a bacon & egg sandwich, which unexpectedly came with a poached egg. Yes, I unintentionally crossed off one of my 2013 Goals! The yolk exploded and trickled down the side of the sandwich as I bravely went in for my first bite. I was surprised by its slightly-cheesy contribution to the meal. It didn't taste like much--especially compared to my stinky hard-boiled egg expectations. I think I actually liked the egg...but, honestly, it was hard to tell because the sandwich as a whole was so FREAKING delicious. Maple butter, lemon-y frisée, toasty "Italian feather loaf" bread, thick-cut bacon: what dreams are made of.

2 - I've been playing with fruity compound butter lately, and am excited to show you what I've used it for! Guesses, anyone?

3 - Just look at this sunset and be happy that the days are getting longer. Lately, when I've been getting off of work, it's still light out! A few evenings a week, Seal Team PT meets at Browns Island and it'd hard to not stop and stare at the colors reflecting over the James River.

4 - My birthday meal was 3-cheese and macaroni from Bamboo Cafe in Richmond. If you live in Richmond and love macaroni & cheese, you should probably head here soon. The setting is a little intimidating, as it's both tight on space and has a very "regulars bar" feel. Once you find an open booth or seat at the bar, things get more comfortable. Some additional quirks: there's only one waitress and the kitchen seems to be about the size of my bathroom. BUT the macaroni & cheese (a combination of Cheddar, Parmesan, and Gouda) is to die for! And Boyfriend loves their bourbon ginger flank steak--served with crispy onion straws.

This weekend, I have a few good friends coming into town for a belated birthday celebration, which means more brunching, baking, and eating :-) Come on, 5:30PM!

Tell me: What have you been eating or making?
