This Halloween weekend (October 30th - November 2nd), Richmond will be hosting its first Fire, Flour & Fork gathering. What's that?!
Fire, Flour & Fork is a "four-day culinary event celebrating the best the Richmond region has to offer: its complex history, its rich artistic community and its established and rising culinary stars". It's the first of its kind in the Mid-Atlantic region and will include a "highly curated" mix of dining events (including an Urban State Fair), demonstrations & talks, food producers, cookbook authors, visiting chefs with Virginia ties, filmmakers, poets, playwrights, culinary historians, craft spirit makers and tableware designers .
Even if you've only been reading my blog for a month, you should know how in love I am with the city I live in. And now all these amazing people, from near and far, will be in this fair city to showcase their talents and celebrate the greatness of Virginia food craft! AHHHHH!
When it comes to food, I love to learn about and try almost anything. However, I'll be the first to admit that I'm closer toward the less severe "food lover" side of the foodie spectrum than the "food snob" side. I like simple things, I'm not insulted by being served the wrong type of wine with a meal, I won't critique how poorly you prepared a cut of beef sous vide (what's that?), and I certainly couldn't tell you what the James Beard award means or entails...just that it has to do with chefs! That's the coolest thing about this event, besides it being LOCAL. Anyone and everyone can take something away from it, even if it's just a full belly.
I'm probably the most excited about two things happening on Friday night: Extracting Secrets at C. F. Sauer Reception & Tour and Festival of the Hungry Ghosts at Hardywood Brewery featuring Christina Tosi of Momofuku Milk Bar (James Beard finalist and creater of crazy sugar things like cake crumbs and cereal milk! What!!!). I've driven past the Sauer Factory building on Broad Street countless times and have always wondered what's inside. It's kind of like the Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory of Richmond, VA...no ones goes in and no one comes out, except for special occasions like this. I HAVE TO GO!!!

On both Friday and Saturday, different culinary and cultural tracks are offered throughout the day (see event schedule). There are two seminars/demos offered under the three categories---FIRE, FLOUR, FORK---for each of the four time slots. So, there's like 24 different seminars a day...meaning over 10,000 possible schedule combinations! (Right?! Or did I just totally disappoint my high school statistics teacher?). Probably not surprisingly, I'd love to go to every FLOUR seminar offered throughout the two days (plus each and every meal) but events like this are meant for broadening your horizons!
Here is my *dream* schedule for Saturday's culinary track...
Fork Over the Hanover Tomatoes (FORK) - 10:00AM
Here the history of the innovative Tomato Clubs in Virginia and about the **famous** Hanover tomato...because haven't we all been curious about this?!
Flour-less: Raw Desserts that Aren't Half-Baked (FLOUR) - 11:15AM
Michelle Williams teamed up with Nettie's Naturally baker Lynette Hawifawi to create gluten-free, vegan and raw desserts for her new restaurant, The Daily. Three things I know very little about, let'd do it!

Smoked and Charred Cocktails (FIRE) - 2:00PM
Thomas T Leggett overseas the cocktail menu at The Roosevelt, one of the best bars in America according to Esquire. 1) Look at the menu. 2) I need to know how he comes up with all those crazy combinations.

THE BEST ricotta pancakes from The Roosevelt...I got coffee instead of a cocktail this time. Mistake.
And finally...
Burning Desire (FIRE) - 3:30PM
Marine-turned-pastry chef Tim Gearhart of Gearhart's Chocolates will talk about his burning desire, making artisanal chocolates. I can't wait to hear his life story (I love hearing people talk about their passions!). I also heard there'd be samples...
